January Garden Alert: Sudden Freezes Threaten After Mild Rains in the South

Following episodes of heavy rain and unseasonably mild weather, the sun now shines against an azure sky—a classic southern winter scene here in the Gard region. A north wind has swept the gray clouds out to sea, with forecasts predicting a comfortable 13°C on January 21st. However, clear skies often herald incoming frost if the wind dies down, and that's expected over the next few mornings. The ground remains waterlogged, some plants are showing early signs of growth, and almond trees are budding on their most exposed branches, dotted with white blossoms. A cold snap after prolonged rain can devastate gardens, making January a real hazard.

Now is the time to double-check protections: inspect winter fleece covers, ensure water reserves in plant saucers are managed, and clear any basins forming near garlic or onions from recent rains. Don't let this mild spell lull you into complacency—winter cold can still strike and harm your garden if you're not vigilant.

Combined, excess water and frost act as a potent threat to Mediterranean plants.
