How to Craft Elegant Unity Candles for Your Wedding: Expert DIY Guide

Materials and Tools

  • Tall white pillar candle
  • Copy of the wedding invitation
  • White decorative ornaments
  • Low-temperature glue gun and glue sticks
  • Straight pins with white ball tops
  • Scissors
  • Wire cutters
  • Cloth-covered wire
  • 3 store-bought white bows or wire-edged white ribbon to make bows
  • White silk rose or white silk flower ornaments
  • 2 tall glass taper candle holders
  • 2 white taper candles

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cut out the written part of the wedding invitation into a rectangle or square, matching the design. Use a copy rather than the original, as invitations are typically on heavy card stock that won't curve easily around the candle.
  2. Position the invitation copy around the pillar candle, leaving space at the top for safe burning and at the bottom for embellishments.
  3. Use wire cutters to trim the straight pins to about 1/2" below the ball heads.
  4. Starting at the top left corner of the invitation copy, align it along the top edge of the paper on the candle. Secure it by inserting the trimmed pins through the paper into the candle every 1/2". Continue around to the starting point—no glue needed, as the pins hold everything firmly in place.
  5. Hot glue a white silk flower to the center of one purchased bow (or make your own). Attach the bow to the space between the invitation and the candle's bottom edge using low-temperature glue to avoid melting the wax. Add more silk flowers around the invitation if desired.
  6. Tie cloth-covered wire around each of the remaining two bows (or make two more with ribbon). Secure a bow around the top of each glass taper candle holder. Place a white taper candle in each holder, then position the pillar candle between them.
