Carefully remove faceplates from the walls you'll be working on. Cover electrical outlets with electrical tape to shield them from liquids. Lay down a drop cloth to protect carpets or floors from drips and debris.
Grab a wallpaper scoring tool like the Paper Tiger (Image 1)—a roller with fine spikes that perforate the paper (Image 2). This lets solvent penetrate and dissolve the adhesive. Roll gently to avoid damaging the wall; patch any accidental gouges with joint compound.
Brush on a commercial gel solvent or similar product, letting it soak as directed on the label to loosen the wallpaper. For a cost-effective option, use warm water mixed with a few tablespoons of vinegar in a spray bottle.
Once the solvent works its magic, start at a seam or edge using a wallpaper scraper, plastic putty knife, or drywall knife. Reapply solvent as needed and scrape steadily until the wallpaper comes off cleanly.
