Use a sharp knife to cut four oranges in half. Carefully spoon the fruit into a bowl, preserving the rind as much as possible—some fruit can stay attached for extra appeal. Save the scooped fruit for snacks or salads.
In each rind half, poke a hole near the top with a wooden skewer or nail, then poke another directly opposite. Thread twine or string through both holes (use the skewer to assist if needed) and tie securely to form a hanger.
Scoop peanut butter into a bowl. Stir in 1 cup cornmeal or rolled oats, plus 1/4 cup raisins or sunflower seeds if using. Knead until slightly sticky. If too crumbly, finely chop and add 1-2 tablespoons of the reserved orange fruit for moisture.
Hold the twine handles aside and spoon the peanut butter mixture into each orange rind half, packing it firmly to entice birds.
Head outside and suspend the feeders from sturdy deciduous shrubs or trees with short, strong branches. Avoid evergreens, as their twigs may not support the weight. Watch birds flock to your handmade treats!
