Looking to create a raised bed in your garden? We've got the simplest, most budget-friendly method that's perfect even for beginners—no handyman skills required.
Here's how we did it with my eight-year-old daughter, who was eager for her own veggie patch. With spare cinder blocks from the garage, we built a compact, effective garden without sacrificing much yard space.
Contents 1. Start by selecting and leveling your site. This takes the most effort, so choose wisely. Consider sunlight needs—full sun for tomatoes, partial shade for others—to ensure success and determine the bed size.
2. Arrange the cinder blocks with holes facing up. This smart design lets you plant directly in the openings for extra growing space. For taller beds, fill holes with cheap soil first for stability.
3. Line the bottom and sides with cardboard pieces before adding soil. This suppresses weeds effectively. We also used it on the sides for safety, as some blocks may have chemical treatments. No cardboard? Woven landscape fabric works too, but cardboard has been foolproof for us.
4. Fill with quality vegetable potting soil. For better drainage, add a base layer of pebbles or straw—optional, as we skipped it with great results.
That's it—your raised vegetable bed is ready! My daughter planted onions, cilantro, tomatoes, carrots, and flowers. She's thrilled, and so are we.
Customize by painting blocks or adding mosaics. For labels, we started with marked plastic spoons, then upgraded to this clever cork method:
From years of gardening projects, this is the easiest we've tried. Zero weeds thanks to the cardboard, and it's thriving. Check it out:
