When to defrost your freezer?

A frosty freezer wastes energy and harbors bacteria, leading to odors and reduced lifespan. Experts recommend defrosting at least twice a year for upright, chest, or combo fridge-freezer models.

Before starting defrosting

Start safely: Switch off and unplug the unit to eliminate electrical risks. Protect your food by keeping the cold chain intact—use insulated coolers, bags, or a cool outdoor spot. Place towels underneath to catch drips.

When there is little frost...

Regular maintenance keeps frost minimal. Wipe walls with a sponge in hot or lukewarm water, or spray boiling water from a bottle, then gently scrape with a squeegee. Remove all residue thoroughly.

When there is a lot of frost...

Act promptly. Place a saucepan of boiling water on a trivet inside, close the door, and wait 15 minutes—the ice will loosen easily. Alternatively, use a hairdryer for targeted hot air or a steam cleaner. Never use sharp tools, as they can damage interiors.

Then clean the inside of the freezer...

Avoid harsh chemicals like Bang. Instead, use a white vinegar-water solution—it's antibacterial, safe, and effective. Clean walls, shelves, and drawers. For odors, rinse with lemon juice water.

Then also clean the outside

Wipe exteriors and seals with vinegar solution. Test seals: Close a paper sheet in the door—if it pulls out easily, replace the gaskets to prevent energy loss. Plug in, cool to minimum temperature, then reload food.

Long-term maintenance of your freezer

Defrost every 3-6 months and clean thoroughly with vinegar to inhibit bacteria. Consider anti-frost mats. For no-power defrosting, spray boiling water and scrape gently. Regularly check seals to maintain efficiency.
