How I Forage Free Seeds to Make Budget-Friendly Fat Balls for Birds This Winter

Winter is fast approaching, and our feathered friends will struggle to find food. As a longtime bird enthusiast, I've ditched pricey store-bought fat balls for this simple, cost-free method using seeds I collect myself.

My Proven Seed-Foraging Method

Late September to early October marks harvest season. I target sunflower and wheat fields near my home. After harvesters pass, I gather fallen sunflower heads from field edges and overlooked wheat stalks.

Back home, I extract the seeds by hand-crushing wheat ears and hammering sunflower heads in a basin—a straightforward process honed over years of feeding local birds.

My Reliable Fat Ball Recipe

Ingredients (makes about 8 balls):

  • 1 kg margarine (budget brand) or unsalted beef fat
  • 800 g foraged seeds

Steps:

  • Melt the margarine or fat, then stir in the seeds.
  • Insert strong wire or iron into 8 molds (like empty yogurt pots) for hanging, fill with the mixture.
  • Cool, unmold, and hang high in trees to protect birds from cats.

I also scatter seeds on the ground for variety.

Feeding Schedule

I start from the first frosts through spring, always providing fresh water. Our garden is now a thriving bird sanctuary—my kids love watching them from the window!

Savings Achieved

A 5 kg bag of birdseed mix costs around €6.90. Foraged seeds cost me nothing, so I'm saving €6.90 this winter! That funds a new bird shelter instead.
