Reader Question: During two composting workshops, participants reported field mice taking refuge under wooden composters. How can we effectively deter them? Many, especially women, find these pests unwelcome.
This issue also affects bottomless plastic composters. The solution is to create a base using rigid wire mesh with 1 cm openings.
Keep the composter's bottom elevated off the ground.
I recommend positioning it on 2 cm thick slabs spaced 2 cm apart and leveled for stability. This prevents corner thrusts from destabilizing square composters over time.
Lay the mesh flat on the slabs, then place the composter on top. The mesh allows insects, worms, and beneficial bugs to pass through while blocking rodents. Always use durable wire mesh.
