How to Plant Asparagus: Expert Guide to Soil Prep and Trench Planting

Mastering asparagus planting starts with the right conditions for this rewarding perennial crop.

Asparagus sells at a premium, making it ideal for your garden if space and soil permit. Years of gardening experience show it delivers bountiful harvests with proper setup.

Choose sandy soil that warms quickly in spring—Asparagus does not succeed in heavy, wet, and cold soil.

Prepare in January for planting mid-February to late April, based on your region. Work in aerated soil with well-ripened organic compost, like manure, at 4 to 5 kg per m².

Dig trenches 1.50 m apart, 30 cm wide and deep. Space claws 60 to 80 cm apart. Cover with just a few cm of soil the first year, about 20 cm the second. Hill asparagus only in the third year, when you harvest.

Pro Tip: Place each claw on a small mound of earth to ensure full coverage when filling.
