Installing a water feature in your garden offers a serene retreat for relaxation. Enhancing it with the right aquatic plants creates a vibrant, balanced ecosystem. With years of experience designing thriving ponds, we've learned that selecting the perfect species is key—each has unique needs for depth, light, and maintenance.
As pond experts, we prioritize plants based on both beauty and functionality. Start with oxygenating plants like Myriophyllum verticillatum, Ceratophyllum, and Callitriche. These workhorses purify the water naturally and improve air quality. A cluster of 4 to 8 cuttings covers about 1/5 of the pond's surface effectively.
Next, incorporate marginal or bank plants with varied foliage, such as water hyacinth, water iris, yellow water lily, and water clover. These thrive in shallow water up to 25 cm deep. For deeper zones over 30 cm, choose submerged specialists like lotus, water plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica), and water lilies.
For shallow-water plants, plant directly into soil pockets along the edges. Prepare the base with thick aquatic felt over the liner to prevent punctures. Use a 20-30 cm soil layer, then top with gravel to secure everything and create a natural look.
Deep-water species require mesh baskets, coconut fiber bags, bricks, or inverted pots on the liner. Opt for generous sizes: 5-7 liters for water lilies and lotuses, 10-20 liters for Thalia and Pontederia. Fill with clay soil around the root ball up to the crown, and finish with lava rocks for stability and aesthetics.
Planting is straightforward when you match species to conditions. The ideal window is April to June. In year one, focus on premium varieties like iris, Pontederia, and water lilies for quick establishment and lasting color.
Always use durable PVC liners for construction. For dynamic features like waterfalls or fountains, install a reliable water pump to keep water circulating and plants healthy.
