DIY Corner Catch-All Tray: Repurpose a Wooden Magazine Rack for Smart Storage

If you're like me—not a natural organizer—struggling to store keys, wallet, mail, and more can be frustrating. Say goodbye to clutter with this clever corner storage solution.

I've recently picked up two classic wooden magazine racks (example here), and one became the base for this project.

An old plate works as a basic valet tray, but it's often unsightly with no dedicated spot in tight spaces like my small hallway. This hack lets me keep my beloved plate while creating a perfect home for it.

Turning a Magazine Rack into Storage Magic

The star of this DIY is a sturdy wooden magazine rack. You'll also need: paint or varnish (optional), 3 screws, 3 washers, 3 matching dowels, a pencil, and tools to drill into the wall and rack.

Step-by-Step Assembly

Mount the rack horizontally in a corner for hidden storage below (ideal for magazines) and a flat top surface above—perfect for your plate or daily essentials.

First, varnish, paint, or leave the rack natural to suit your style.

Pre-drill 3 holes in the rack's bottom: 2 on the more accessible wall side, 1 on the other.

Position the rack level and perfectly horizontal to mark screw spots on both walls. Drill the walls and insert dowels.

Secure it with screws and washers to prevent wood damage.

The Finished Result

Now my hallway has a fresh, functional spot for mail, keys, and odds and ends. Pro tip: I'll tuck my internet router inside, routing cables through the existing hole for a clean look.
