IKEA gives furniture a second life with Furniture trade-in service

IKEA is launching Bring Back Friday this year in response to the popular Black Friday sale. This campaign calls for extra attention for the new Furniture trade-in service of the Swedish home furnishings store.

IKEA gives furniture a second life with Furniture trade-in service

IKEA buys furniture that is still in good condition back from customers for a reduced amount, in order to find a new home for it through the well-known Koopjeshoek. The Furniture trade-in service is now available in all Dutch stores and contributes to IKEA's ambition to be circular and climate positive by 2030.

Bring Back Friday

By launching the Furniture trade-in service around Black Friday – a day that is globally associated with excessive consumption – IKEA wants to give its customers an extra incentive to sell their furniture back. The Bring Back Friday campaign runs from November 15 to November 26, 2021.

For family members, it applies that they do not receive 15% but no less than 50% of the purchase value!

At IKEA.nl, customers can enter the furniture and its condition and then receive a non-binding price proposal from IKEA. That varies between thirty and fifty percent of the original purchase amount. If the condition of the furniture when returned to the store corresponds to the information entered online, they will receive an IKEA voucher worth the price proposal.

The voucher is valid indefinitely, giving customers time to think carefully about the products they need and avoid impulse purchases. IKEA sells the furniture again in the Koopjeshoek for the same price as the value of the voucher and therefore does not charge any extra margin.

”With this service we realize a second-hand range of good quality furniture in our stores. The service makes it easy and financially attractive for both the seller and the buyer to make a sustainable choice. It is a step within our ambition to become circular, this year we want to give 20,000 products a second life in a new home.”
Hanneke van de Vijfeijke – Sustainability Manager IKEA Netherlands

IKEA asks its customers to be mindful prior to the store visit and only come to the store with purpose. The store is closely monitoring developments regarding the coronavirus.
