Where in the house should you install your charging station? Indoor or outdoor?

The electric vehicle charging station is a device designed to supply your car at home at any time. As such, it must be installed in a strategic location that makes its use more practical on a daily basis. Whether indoors or outdoors, the right location for a charging station is where it is easily accessible and where it does not fear shocks or bad weather and even less vandalism. Installing a charging station at home does not require major development work, only there are a few rules to follow, such as, for example, calling on an IRVE installer.

Electric charging station:indoor or outdoor installation?

Electrical equipment such as the electric car charging station is ideally installed in an enclosed and covered place. Indeed, this type of installation generally fears the infiltration of water and dust which is likely to damage its components. Indoor installation is therefore to be preferred and for this, the owner can use his garage. Installing a charging station in a garage has many advantages, starting with the possibility of protecting the device from all external attacks. But by choosing a covered location, the owner also protects his vehicle from heat and cold during the charging session. Indeed, the ambient temperature has a significant effect on the charging performance of a vehicle. Strong heat is likely to create overheating which will be detected by the charging system and which will immediately stop the power supply, while cold weather makes the battery less receptive to charging. The ideal location for an electric charging station is therefore in a covered and enclosed space. Nevertheless, not all electric vehicle users are lucky enough to benefit from a garage, which makes outdoor installation inevitable. Terminal manufacturers have anticipated this eventuality by designing weatherproof and shockproof products. Not necessarily more expensive than the others, the waterproof and resistant charging stations are intended to be installed on a facade, in a courtyard or a garden according to the preferences of its owner. However, the level of resistance of these devices varies according to their protection ratings. At a minimum, the device must have an IP54 protection rating and at least IK08 resistance.

Which location should you choose for your charging station?

Whether the owner chooses an indoor or outdoor installation, he will have to determine the ideal location for his charging station. Each house has a different configuration and that is why it is important to know the best practices for installing a charging station. The most essential criterion concerns the accessibility of the charging station so that no obstacle can hinder the charging of the vehicle, whenever it needs it. If the wallbox is installed inside a garage, it must be ensured that the charging port of the car is in the same alignment as the charging point. It is therefore necessary to pay attention to its usual direction of parking. On the other hand, it is also necessary to take into account the available space, whether inside or outside the house. The most practical for a charging station is to be fixed to the wall. In this case, there is no risk of collision with the car. However, if it is imperative to install the bollard on a stand, ensure that there is a reasonable distance between it and the usual location of the car.

Choose a location near the electrical panel

When the IRVE installer establishes an estimate for the installation of a charging station, it determines the costs according to several parameters, including the distance separating the chosen location from the electrical panel of the house. The greater this distance, the higher the installation costs. The choice of the location of the charging station for electric vehicles can therefore also be made according to its proximity to the electricity meter of the house. However, it is still advisable to favor a practical and accessible place where you can recharge your car in the best conditions.
