Transform a plain store-bought shower curtain into a vibrant bathroom focal point with this ombre dyeing project. From my years of hands-on DIY crafts, I can confirm it's incredibly affordable—the curtain costs under $20, dye under $5—and takes just about an hour to complete.

Protect your work area with a drop cloth, as dye can be messy and permanent. Fill a large plastic tub or sink with 1-2 gallons of water and fully submerge the shower curtain.

Wring out the shower curtain to remove excess water while keeping it damp. Set it aside and empty the container.

Boil a large pot of water and remove from heat. Wear rubber gloves and shake the liquid dye bottle per the instructions.

Pour half the dye bottle (or 1/2 cup) into the large plastic container.

Measure 1 cup of salt and add it to the container with 4 cups of freshly boiled water. Stir thoroughly with a metal spoon.

Pour in an additional 2 gallons of hot water plus a small capful of laundry detergent. Stir well to combine.

Fold the shower curtain in half from grommet to grommet, ensuring it fits easily in the container. Thread twine through the top grommets to keep the fabric even and promote smooth ombre lines.

Wrap the top of the curtain around a peg or rod several times and hold it securely.

Lower the bottom of the curtain into the dye bath up to the point where you want the color to start—in this case, about 12 inches from the top to keep the upper portion white.

For a subtle fade, dip the top section briefly (seconds to desired lightness), then lift and repeat in 1-2 foot increments every 1-3 minutes, gradually exposing more fabric for the light-to-dark ombre effect.

If a section dyes too darkly, rinse it immediately with water to lighten and blend the tones.

Leave the bottom edge in the dye bath for at least 15 minutes to achieve the deepest shade.

Wring out excess dye, then rinse the entire curtain under cold running water from lightest to darkest areas until the water runs clear. Follow the dye bottle's washing instructions.
