As a DIY expert with years of upcycling vintage pieces, I've transformed countless worn-out lamps into stunning statement pieces. Combine an old lamp, colorful wrapping paper, fabric, and simple trims for a fresh, professional-looking refresh that's both easy and affordable.
1. Lay a long sheet of wrapping paper on your work surface. Align one edge with the lampshade's seam and secure with painter's tape.
2. Gently roll the lampshade along the paper until it meets the taped edge. Trim any excess paper. For larger shades, join multiple sheets of paper as needed.
3. At the taped edge, fold the paper so edges meet neatly and secure with painter's tape to form a tube.
4. Fold the paper over the top and bottom edges of the lampshade. Use a permanent marker to trace the shade's top and bottom outlines. Remove the paper, then cut along the side folds and marked lines to create your lampshade template.
5. Tape the template to a fresh sheet of wrapping paper. Add 1-inch allowances to the top, bottom, and sides using a marker and ruler. Cut out this expanded pattern.
6. Iron the fabric smooth, ensuring the pattern aligns correctly with the print direction. Cut the fabric to match the pattern, then remove the template. Fold one side edge over 1 inch and iron flat for a clean hem.
7. Apply hot glue along the lampshade's existing seam and attach the fabric's unfinished edge, leaving 1 inch extra at top and bottom. Roll the fabric smoothly around the shade, then glue the ironed edge over the starting seam, pulling taut for a wrinkle-free fit.
8. Working around the top edge, apply hot glue inside and fold the fabric over for a finished look. Repeat for the bottom, trimming excess fabric as you go.
9. Glue decorative tape inside the shade to cover raw edges at top and bottom. Add decorative ornaments to the outer bottom edge with hot glue for a polished touch.
