As a seasoned DIY enthusiast with years of upcycling projects under my belt, I've found stacked cans make for a sturdy, industrial-style floor lamp. Leave them rustic or customize with paint, burlap, or fabric for a personal touch. This method works with books or other items too—adapt as you like.
Place the bottom can upside down on a pine wood board. Trace around it with a pencil, then use a hacksaw to cut slightly inside the line for a snug fit inside the can.
Drill three holes through the wood and tin can to create feet. Add several washers to each of three screws, insert them, and top with felt pads to protect floors. These elevate the lamp for cord clearance.
Drill a centered hole through both the tin and wood for the threaded pipe and cord—keep it perfectly vertical.
Punch holes in the top and bottom of all cans. Thread the pipe through the bottom can's hole to form the lamp base.
Secure with a nut at the bottom, then slide the remaining cans onto the threaded tube.
Cap the tube end with a copper sleeve, leaving 1/2" exposed for the lamp kit connector. Thread the connector on to compress the assembly. Run the power cord (wrap with electrical tape if needed) from bottom to top through the pipe. Mount in the harp, wire the socket per manufacturer instructions, add a bulb, and fit a shade for low-wattage use.
