How to paint a patterned rug

Do you love the look of elegant designer rugs, but don't have the budget to match your style? It's easy to paint a plain rug the exact color and pattern you want.

Step 1

Lay the rug

Place the rug on a fabric or surface that you don't worry about getting painted. Make sure the rug is nice and flat. If the ends are curved up, place heavy objects on the ends so they lie flat.

Create design with masking tape

Mark your design on the mat with the masking tape. Lines are the easiest to achieve. Just remember, the masking tape will be blank. In other words, wherever the masking tape is, the paint will NOT be under it.

Create a friendly workspace for painting

When you've finished taping the entire rug, and the tape is nice and flat, it's time to paint. (Again, make sure you're on a paint-friendly surface. The last thing you want is paint getting on your beautiful hardwood floors.)

It's time to paint

Liberally apply the paint to the carpet in open spaces. Brush it as even as possible. If necessary, apply two coats until desired paint color is achieved. Let the paint dry between each coat.

Remove the tape

When the painting is halfway through, slowly remove the tape. It should come straight up, leaving you with perfectly straight lines underneath. Let the paint dry completely.
