Choose stripe widths and direction proportional to your room size—narrow stripes can get lost in large spaces, while wide ones overwhelm small rooms.
For dramatic effect, alternate flat and semi-gloss paints. Apply the base color 24-48 hours before taping to fully cure the flat paint.
Once dry, mark stripes 4 to 12 inches apart, noting points on the walls for precision. Tape off ceilings and baseboards. Use a 'tape legend' with pre-marked painter's tape to simplify measuring.

A chalk line or laser level guarantees straight tape lines. Smooth edges with your fingernail or a putty knife for crisp results.
Avoid red or yellow chalk—they stain permanently.

Fully cover each stripe with semi-gloss paint, as gaps will show when dry (Image 1). Remove tape while wet for clean edges (Image 2).
Create a faux chair rail with a horizontal stripe 4 feet off the floor or faux molding at wall tops.
