Expert DIY Guide: Painting Faux Leather Texture on Walls

Introduction

Apply the Base Coat

Mask off the edges of the wall with painter's tape. Apply a base coat of cream paint to the wall and allow it to dry completely.

Step 1

Create the Texture Painting Tool

As an experienced painter, I've found that a DIY tool made from suede fabric delivers authentic faux leather results. Cut suede into strips measuring about 2" by 4". Gather the strips in your hand and secure one end with a rubber band to form a multi-layered texturing tool.

Apply the Glaze

Mix bronzing paint with glazing medium in a paint tray to achieve your desired topcoat color (image 1). Start with a pouncing technique using a foam brush to apply the glaze along the edges of the first wall section (image 2). Then, roll on the glaze evenly across the section (image 3).

Distress and Texture the Glaze

Dip the suede tool in water and squeeze out the excess. Gently pat the wall to lift some of the glaze, creating depth (image 1). As the glaze starts to dry, press a damp cloth onto the surface to soften the finish (image 2).

Work in small sections across the wall—apply glaze, texture with the suede tool, then soften with the cloth. The glaze dries quickly, so stay efficient for professional results.
