New carpets can cost a fortune. As experienced DIYers, we've saved big by turning inexpensive rug scraps into gorgeous area rugs using upholstery paint and painter's tape.
Lay the rug flat on drop cloths. Ensure it's even and square along the edges for a professional finish.

Begin your stripe pattern from one edge, measuring each stripe's width. Account for the painter's tape coverage in your measurements.

Press painter's tape firmly into the carpet to seal edges and prevent paint bleed. Use double layers for better protection. Cover areas beyond the tape generously with fabric and brown paper—at least six inches on each side—to contain overspray.

Spray evenly and steadily without shaking the can over the stripes. Distribute paint lightly to avoid drips under the tape. Wipe any puddles gently with a rag. Allow full drying, applying a second coat where needed per can instructions.
Flip to the rug's reverse side and continue while the first side dries, maximizing efficiency.

After about an hour, perform a moisture test, then carefully peel off the tape. Ensure stripes are fully dry before disturbing.
Vary stripe widths and incorporate multiple colors with fresh tape applications. Alternate sides until the entire rug is complete.

Allow complete drying (at least 8 hours, ideally overnight) before use or sealing.
