How to make a Linked Vellum Floor Lamp

Materials and tools:

lamp holder
metal screen form
colored vellum
sticky spray
scissors
1/8" hole punch
Non-marking Mylar or quilter heat resistant stencils
jump rings
1" binder rings

Steps:

1. Determine the best size for Mylar squares by measuring the circumference of the screen shape. The lamp shade shown was 38 inches in circumference, 4" x 6" rectangles were used.

2. Once the size of the Mylar rectangles is determined, cut the same size rectangles from Quilter's heat resistant templates.

3. Cover vellum sheets with spray adhesive and cover with pre-cut quilter heat resistant templates. Press out any air bubbles and cut each rectangle out of the vellum.

4. Mark a hole 1/4-inch from the edge, centered, on each side of each colored rectangle piece. Drill holes with a hole punch.

5. Once all the squares have been punched out, it's time to join them. Start by assembling one vertical row at a time. It's easier to put the display ring in place and work from there.

6. Use jump rings to attach the first (top) row of colored rectangles to the metal screen ring. Firmly hold the colored rectangles to hide the metal ring.

7. For the second color square (the second down from the top), thread a one-inch ring through the hole in the bottom of the first rectangle and the top of the second. Be sure to hide the hinge on the inside of the screen so it is not visible. Continue linking seven more squares until you complete the vertical row.

8. Start the next row as you did in step 6, and continue all the way around the circumference of the lamp.

9. Finally, link the vertical rows to each other horizontally by placing one-inch joining rings in the holes on both sides of the rectangle.
