As fall progresses, acorns continue to drop from our oak trees—a few handfuls daily. My kids and I have beaten the squirrels to amass a surprisingly large collection. One of my favorite craft experiments: turning these durable little nuts into a stunning garland. What started as painted acorns for centerpieces evolved into this victorious DIY decoration.
Acorns often harbor insects from trees or ground, so spread them on a baking sheet and roast at 225°F for 15 minutes to eliminate pests before bringing them indoors.

Select craft paints to match your occasion and apply to each acorn with a soft-bristled brush. Two coats ensure even coverage.

After paint dries, use a 1/16-inch drill bit to pierce from the top. It's surprisingly simple! Secure any loose caps with a dot of adhesive if needed.

Fine-gauge wire works best for its stiff, pointed tip; needle and thread are good alternatives. Overlap acorns on the wire, alternating colors, until the garland reaches your desired length.

Drape it over a feature wall, chandelier, or doorway. Stand back to admire—it'll delight year after year, even if a few caps loosen, as the natural color beneath blends seamlessly.
