Start by stripping the old finish from your table. Sand the surface smooth, then clean thoroughly with mineral spirits to remove residue, dirt, grease, fingerprints, and paint. This reveals any wood blemishes. Avoid metal tools during cleaning—they can react with the wood's tannins, causing discoloration.

Once mineral spirits dry fully, apply stain using fine-grade steel wool. Work it into the grain in a zigzag pattern for even absorption and to prevent brush marks.
Wipe excess stain off the surface 1-2 minutes after application for even penetration. A helper with a buffing rag can follow you for efficiency. Table legs absorb quickly, so wipe them immediately.
Let stain dry 24 hours. Choose a finish like polyurethane or tung oil. Rub into the grain, allowing full drying between coats for a durable, professional result.
