How to make a stylish low-stitched lumbar pillow

Introduction

Simple but oh-so-elegant

Style pillows, especially long, skinny lumbar pillows, are having a serious style moment right now. The problem? These pretty accent pieces can put a not-so-pretty dent in your wallet. Instead of cleaning up the clearance aisle waiting for these beauties to go on sale, make your own with just a few inexpensive materials and your sewing machine. This easy DIY will have you adding one stylish cushion after another to your bedroom or living room in a single afternoon!

Measure + Cut Fabric

Cut fabric to desired length, including an extra ½ inch for sewing seams. We wanted this particular pillow to be an eye-catching piece at 48"L x 12"H, so we cut two pieces of fabric that measure 13" x 49" to allow for extra room for seams. For this project, you can use anything from a piece of upholstery fabric to a blanket or even a vintage rug - any sturdy textile will do!

Pin cloth

Lay two pieces of fabric on top of each other, with the back (inside of the pillow) of the fabric facing out. Pin the longer sides (top and bottom) about ½ inch from the edges to guide your sewing seam.

Pro Tip

We sew this part of our pillow inside out so that the top and bottom seams are hidden inside.

Sew long sides

With a sewing machine, sew the two longer sides together, leaving the two short sides open for stuffing. Be sure not to sew the entire length of the fabric, leaving at least ½ inch at each end to finish.

Flip + Sew one end

Turn the fabric right side out. At one end, tuck a piece of trim between the fabric, fold the raw edges under, and pin them in place before sewing. If you're not using piping or fringe, just follow the same steps without the trim piece.

Fill it up

From the open end, stuff the pillow to the desired softness. Then sew the final short side as above.
