Long, slender lumbar pillows are a hot trend in home decor, adding instant style to beds and sofas. But store-bought versions often come with a hefty price tag. As an experienced interior designer, I've perfected this straightforward sewing project using affordable materials. Create custom pillows for your living room or bedroom in just one afternoon with basic sewing skills.

Cut two pieces of fabric to your desired dimensions, adding ½ inch on all sides for seams. For this striking 48"L x 12"H pillow, I cut panels measuring 13" x 49". Opt for durable upholstery fabric, a cozy blanket, or even a vintage rug—any sturdy textile works beautifully.

Place the two fabric pieces right sides together (wrong sides out). Pin the long sides (top and bottom) ½ inch from the edges to mark your seam lines.
Sewing inside out ensures the top and bottom seams are neatly hidden inside the pillow.

Using a sewing machine, stitch the two long sides together, leaving the short ends open for stuffing. Stop at least ½ inch from each end to allow for finishing.

Flip the fabric right side out. At one open end, tuck in trim (like piping or fringe) if desired, fold under the raw edges, pin securely, and sew closed. Skip the trim for a clean look.

Fill from the remaining open end to your preferred firmness, then fold under the edges, pin, and sew shut as before.

The minimalist design shines on its own, but elevate it with decorative corner tassels for extra flair.
