As an experienced parent and crafter who's built these for my own children, I transformed a plain wall by lining it with soft white batting and crafting reusable sticky felt pieces. This setup lets kids unleash their creativity, building vibrant cityscapes, lush landscapes, and whimsical scenes.
Grab a tape measure to note the height and width of your chosen wall space. Cut the batting to fit using heavy-duty scissors. For an ideal kid-friendly height, aim for 48" to 60".
Once sized, spray adhesive straight onto the wall's center. Wait two minutes, then position the batting.
Start your first batting strip in the wall's center for perfectly symmetrical seams.
For a rock-solid hold, evenly coat the back of the batting with spray adhesive.
Align the batting to the wall's center, starting at the top. Unroll fully, then add spray adhesive for extra support along baseboards.
With the center piece secure, add adjacent strips, ensuring seams align for clean, straight lines.
Once all pieces are in place, trim the bottom and sides with sturdy scissors, leaving 1/2” of wall exposed. This border gets fabric later, creating a framed effect with gently rounded edges from the batting.
Cut felt to match the wall's dimensions in "railroad" style—rolling widthwise for horizontal strips. Starting at the top, use a hot glue gun to attach it over the 1/2" exposed frame.
On a flat surface, trace shapes with a marker and cut them out using sharp scissors.
To build full scenes, stock up on diverse felt cutouts: people, animals, buildings, scenery, vehicles, clouds, sun, moon, lightning, and more vehicles for variety.
Vary building shapes and colors to keep cityscapes dynamic and engaging.
