Creating boho-inspired woven hanging planters is simpler than you might think. With basic weaving techniques around a simple pot, you'll craft your own stunning piece in just one afternoon. As an experienced crafter, I've perfected this method for reliable, beautiful results every time.
To start weaving, first set up the warp—the vertical threads that form your loom.
Cut strips of cardboard or rolled paper and tape them to the top and bottom edges of the pot. This clever support keeps the warp threads taut and protruding evenly for smooth weaving.
Create the warp by tying twine to the center of the pot's top. Wrap it clockwise around the pot, spacing threads evenly until the entire surface is covered, forming a sturdy vertical grid.
Begin at the bottom with tassels using the rya knot technique: Fold a piece of yarn in half, place the loop between two warp threads, pull the ends through the loop, and tighten. Repeat for even layers of fringe as desired.
Now weave upward using the classic tabby weave: Pass yarn over and under alternating warp threads, reversing direction each row. Use a tapestry needle for precision, or go freehand. Speed it up with thicker or doubled yarn, and experiment with stripes or patterns.
Continue until you reach the top, tucking yarn ends into the weave for a clean finish.
Secure the top warp ends by pairing and knotting them short.
Gently remove the cardboard or paper supports.
