As a DIY expert with years of experience crafting durable outdoor decor, I've perfected this method to create a personalized floor cloth that anchors any patio or porch. It's far more affordable than store-bought rugs and lets you choose your exact colors and patterns for a truly unique look.

For a Moroccan-inspired design, draw six 5-inch diameter circles side by side in pairs, spaced 1 inch apart. Draw three horizontal lines at 2.5 inches where pairs meet and four vertical lines for the spacing. Trace the inside of the top and bottom pairs and the outside of the middle circles.

Use a craft knife to cut out the shape. Save the cut cardstock piece—it'll help align the pattern perfectly during painting.

Position your stencil on the canvas and use a foam brush to paint the shape. Load the brush lightly to avoid drips—dab edges first, then fill the center. Start with a straight row of evenly spaced shapes, then add rows below until reaching your desired rug size. Let it dry thoroughly.

Offset the next rows to fill gaps, using the saved cutout and pencil guidelines for alignment. Repeat across the entire area and allow the paint to dry completely.

Place the painted canvas face down over the rug pad and cut it 2 inches larger than the pad's edges.

Spray a light coat of basting adhesive under the rug pad, then on the canvas edges. Fold the canvas over the pad's long sides.

Spray and fold the shorter edges for neat corners. Quilting pins or clips can secure it temporarily, but the spray adhesive holds firm for sewing.

Thread a heavy-duty or denim needle and sew the canvas securely to the pad for lasting durability.

Seal the finished rug with Scotchgard to shield it from weather and wear.
Place your custom rug in your outdoor space and enjoy the professional results.
