DIY expert Joanne Palmisano shares this clever upcycling project, photographed by Susan Teare. Follow these proven steps for a functional, eye-catching message board.

Head to your local hardware or metal shop to get galvanized sheet metal cut precisely to the size of your frame's back insert.

Clean the frame thoroughly and sand it to remove the old finish, creating a smooth surface for optimal paint adhesion.

Brush on two coats of primer to the frame. Allow the first coat to dry completely before adding the second for a durable base.

With the primer dry, apply painter's tape for your pattern—simple stripes work beautifully. Press edges firmly to prevent bleeding.

Paint your accent color over the tape and entire frame. Let it dry, then apply a second coat for vibrant, even results.

Once dry, carefully peel off the tape. Use a fine brush for any touch-ups to perfect the finish.

Slide the galvanized sheet into the frame, secure the backing, and bend the staples or tabs to hold everything firmly.

Attach a hanger to the back and proudly display your new magnetic memo board—perfect for notes and photos.
