Traditional gift wrap often ends up in the trash after just one use. As a seasoned crafter with years of upcycling projects under my belt, I recommend recycling old newspapers or advertising flyers into sturdy, colorful gift bags instead. These zero-cost bags are simple to make and perfect for sustainable gifting.
Skip the waste—transform those piles of brochures and papers into practical gift bags. Here's how:

1. Lay a rectangular sheet of newspaper horizontally. Double it if the paper is thin.
2. Fold about 2 cm along one long side and one short side.
3. Glue the long-side fold. Flip the sheet so the glued crease is at the top.

4. Fold the sheet in half widthwise, aligning edges on the short folded side. Glue the fold to the aligned edge.

5. Open the sheet so the glued fold is in the center. Flatten into a rectangle.
6. Fold up the bottom about 1/3 of the rectangle's length to form the bag base.

7. Fold the bottom flap's corners into triangles, meeting the rectangle's edge—like gift-wrapping. Crease firmly.

8. Open the bottom—it resembles a boat shape.

9. Fold the creased edges inward to form new triangles.

10. Repeat on both sides for a solid bottom.

11. Fold the remaining flaps toward the center, overlapping slightly. Secure with tape or glue.

12. Flip the bag right-side up, open it, and crease the four corners if desired.

13. Cut two paper strips for handles and fold each in half lengthwise.

14. Stack the strips and fold 1/3 of each end at 90 degrees.

15. Glue the handles inside the bag.

16. Cut cardstock to fit the bag bottom and insert for reinforcement.

Your custom gift bag is ready! This quick craft takes about 10 minutes initially but becomes effortless with practice. Ideal for holidays, it handles awkward shapes like bottles perfectly.
Enhance with tissue paper, colored tape, or glitter. Pro tip: Use vibrant flyers for the best look.
