Measure your window's height and width. Add 12 inches to the height and 4 inches to the width—these are your fabric cutting dimensions. Center any pattern or design motifs for a balanced look.

For a clean, professional finish, start with double-fold hems on the long sides. Place fabric right side down, fold up 2 inches along one long edge, pin, and press. Fold over again to encase the raw edge, creating a 1-inch hem. Pin, press, then sew 1/8 inch from the inner fold edge, using your presser foot as a guide. Repeat on the other side.

The wide bottom hem adds weight for a straight drape. Fold up 4 inches along the bottom edge, adjust to lay flat, press, and pin. Fold over again using the 4-inch mark as a guide for a sturdy double hem. Pin and press firmly.

Create a casing for your curtain rod. With right side down, fold down 2 inches, press, then fold another 2 inches. Pin, press, and sew close to the inner fold edge, using the presser foot as a guide. Backstitch at both ends for durability.

Select 1-inch-wide ribbon that complements your fabric. Cut two pieces, each double your window height plus 2 feet. Fold each in half to form a loop, drape over the top rod pocket—one half behind the fabric, one in front—with ends even. Position evenly, about a quarter from each side.

Pin the ribbons securely, ensuring pins catch both layers. Stitch in place along the top hem seam for a strong hold.

Slide the rod into the pocket and mount. Tie ribbons at your desired shade length using double bows—or fold and tuck ends for a neat finish—to create beautiful stacked folds when raised.
