As a seasoned crafter with over a decade of experience in handmade holiday decor, I love creating meaningful ornaments like this button family tree. Use large plastic buttons to craft this delightful piece, personalized with family names for a cherished Christmas gift.

Arrange buttons by size to form the tree shape. Start with smaller ones for the trunk base, then layer progressively larger buttons for the lower branches, tapering to smaller ones at the top for a realistic tree silhouette.

Cut a 20-inch piece of clear filament thread and pass both ends through one trunk button to center it.

Slide the button fully down to the thread's center. Thread the largest buttons onto the lower sections first, gradually using smaller ones toward the top to build the tree form.

Continue threading smaller buttons up to the tree's peak. Tie a secure knot at the top to prevent buttons from slipping off.

Attach a star charm to transform it into an ornament, plus a silver hoop or jump ring for hanging. Secure both at the top knot.

Pass the top thread ends through the uppermost buttons from the top. Once they emerge from the tree's center, tie another knot and trim close for a clean, seamless finish.

Using a metallic Sharpie permanent marker, elegantly write family names on the button sides to create your unique family tree.

Cut a ribbon piece and glue it to the silver hoop at the top, ready to adorn your Christmas tree.
