Select a wool sweater at least one size too large. Shrink it by washing in hot water with a bit of detergent, then drying on high heat for a sturdy felted fabric.

Lay the sweater flat on a work surface. Slice vertically up the center of the front. Cut each sleeve about 2 inches from the armpit—save them for fingerless gloves later.

Try on the piece and pin where it hits the center of your rib cage. Remove it, then cut evenly across the bottom at that mark. Round off the front corner edges for a smooth finish.

Whipstitch the edges with embroidery floss. Embellish your bolero-style shrug with buttons or other fun details for a personalized touch.

Slip on your new shrug and proudly showcase this upcycled creation.
