As a experienced seamstress who's crafted countless custom baby outfits, I love how a simple ruffle addition turns a basic onesie into a photogenic showstopper for newborn sessions. This quick sewing project takes less than an hour and costs just pennies using scrap knit fabric.

Cut three 2" x 44" strips from your knit fabric.

Sew a gathering stitch along the center of each strip, leaving the ends unsewn. Gently pull the bobbin threads from both ends to create even ruffles.

Repeat the gathering process for all three strips.

Pin one end of a ruffled strip to the center bottom of the onesie's back. Ensure the pins only catch the back layer, not the front.

Roll the ruffle into a tight spiral, positioning it flat against the back bottom as you go.

Using your sewing machine, stitch the ruffle in place at several points around the spiral—staying on the back only. Backstitch every inch or so for a secure hold without visible front stitches.

Clip all threads, and admire your first ruffled layer.

Repeat with the remaining ruffle strips to build up your desired fluffy bottom.

Nothing melts hearts like a ruffled baby bum—perfect for those unforgettable photos.
