Gas cylinders vary in size and color based on their original use. We repurposed leftovers from Blog Cabin 2015—a compact white propane tank for a wide, shallow hood, and taller yellow oxygen or green CO2 tanks for deeper pendant shapes.

Cleaning the Gas Cylinder

Sourcing old tanks from welding shops or junkyards? Remove valves first if possible. These vessels can harbor flammable gases, oxygen, or residual pressure—extreme hazards. Always fill tanks fully with water before cutting to displace any trapped gases safely.

Safety First

For thicker-walled tanks, a plasma cutter excels: it blasts compressed air through a high-voltage arc, creating plasma that slices cleanly with a distinctive edge. Thinner walls suit an angle grinder with a fiber disc. Rent plasma cutters from tool rental shops if needed. Protect yourself with a shielded welding mask, gloves, and gear against intense UV light and heat.

Mastering the Plasma Cutter

Test amperage on similar-thickness steel for optimal speed without damaging your cylinder. Grind for clean metal contact before clamping the ground. For thick tanks, boost amps and slow the cut. Start by angling the tip into the steel so molten metal flows away from you, then go perpendicular once through.

Using an Angle Grinder

Follow existing weld lines for straight cuts around the tank. Go slow to prevent blade binding or jumping. Mix straight and angled cuts to match your design vision.

Attaching the Cable Clamp

Cylinders are heavy for standard kits, so use 5/32" stainless steel cable with clamps for support. Thread the light kit's plug end through the top center hole, then secure the clamp against the cable. Adjust clamp position for perfect pendant height.

Mix and Match

Each cylinder is unique—combine them for one-of-a-kind lighting. Clear or soft white bulbs diffuse ambient glow; we chose Edison-style for dramatic accent lighting.
