Measure your child's wingspan from armpit to wrist. We'll call this the "armpit width."
Cut two pieces of felt to the armpit width by 9 inches long. From the bottom of each rectangle, cut diagonally to the right to form tapering pieces. These will create the shooting star's tail.
Cut four 9-inch pieces of elastic. Fold each in half to form a loop and attach to the top end of the felt pieces. Sew securely—these loops will fit over arms and hands.
Paint stripes on the felt with fabric paint for a kite-like tail effect. Let dry completely.
Cut two identical star shapes from cotton fabric. Cut a 9-inch elastic piece, form a loop, place it face-down on one star, and sew in place.
Layer the second star on top, right sides together, enclosing the elastic. Pin edges and stitch around, leaving an opening.
Clip seams close to stitching without cutting threads; notch between points. Turn right side out, poke out points with a finger or knitting needle, press, and stuff with poly-fill.
Fold in raw edges at the opening and pin closed. Whipstitch securely for a polished finish.
