Painting it yourself saves money while letting you achieve the exact color and pattern you envision.
Prepare your workspace in a flat, level, well-ventilated outdoor area. Cover the surface with craft paper, then roll out your indoor-outdoor sisal rug. Use a tape measure to determine stripe widths proportional to the rug's shape, scale, and size—8 to 12 inches wide works best for most rugs. Mark the stripe positions with a permanent marker.
Once marked, apply painter's tape along the outer edges of each mark. This creates crisp lines between painted stripes and natural ones. Note: Narrower stripes stay unpainted, while wider areas get painted.
Completely cover the unpainted stripes with brown or craft paper. Ensure full coverage—spray paint can easily overspray into unwanted areas.
For rugs with contrasting binding edges, mask them with painter's tape to shield from overspray and maintain their decorative appeal.
Press down firmly along all tape edges against the rug fibers. This prevents paint bleed for professional-looking stripes.
Hold the can 8 inches from the surface and apply two even coats in controlled sweeps. Allow at least two hours drying time between coats for proper adhesion—rushing can cause bubbling. Once dry, seal with matte acrylic sealer spray for durability.
Gently peel off the tape without breaking through the paint layers. Pull slowly to avoid lifting paint from the fibers.
