Got a storage ottoman that's looking worn or clashing with your decor? Breathe new life into it by reupholstering with fresh fabric. In this second-hand find, the fabric was outdated, but the sturdy frame was solid. Always seek pieces with strong bones—fabric and finishes are easy to update.
Before starting, remove all hardware like drawstrings, tassels, hinges, and wooden legs. This makes the project much easier.

The top is the simplest part. Place fabric right-side down, then position the ottoman top face-down on it. Eyeball the fabric needed to cover it fully—no precise measuring required. Leave 2 inches extra to fold under before stapling.

Cut fabric to size, then create 1-inch pleats on all four sides. Iron for crisp seams. Center the top on the fabric and staple around the edges, pulling taut as you go.

Corners can be tricky—fold them just like gift-wrapping for a neat finish.

For the base, lay fabric face-down. Place the ottoman on its side to gauge coverage. Ensure enough to wrap fully, or measure one side and multiply by four, plus 1-inch seam allowances. Fold and iron all edges.

Lay out the fabric, position the ottoman on its side, and staple the top and bottom of one side first. This anchors it securely. Pull fabric tight and staple around the remaining sides and bottom. At the seam, staple from inside or add glue to seal.

Screw the legs back on, flip it over, and admire your refreshed ottoman.
