This enchanting kids' hideaway is as fun to build as it is to play in. As a seasoned DIY crafter with years of hands-on experience creating play structures, I've perfected this simple project using affordable canvas drop cloths and basic hardware store supplies.

Fold the canvas in half lengthwise. From the folded edge, mark 6 inches along the fold and 20 inches along the open edge. Use a stake as a straightedge to draw a diagonal line connecting these points. From the bottom point on the fold, measure 10 inches along the fold and 38 inches along the open edge, then draw another diagonal line. Repeat in reverse: mark 10 inches from the previous line on the fold and 38 inches on the open edge, drawing the diagonal.

Cut along all marked lines and the folded edge to create the panels.

Hem all raw edges for a clean finish. Fold edges under 1/4 inch, press with an iron, then fold over another 1/4 inch to enclose the raw edge. Stitch along the pressed fold.

Overlap the two small panels by 1 inch to form the front door. Pin from the top down 24 inches and sew them together securely.

Align two panels with short edges at the top, right sides facing out. Sew together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

Fold the fabric over the new seam so right sides face in. Mark a line 2-1/2 inches from the stitched edge. Pin and sew along this line to form a channel for the stakes. Repeat for all remaining seams and panels.

Turn the teepee so channels are inside, then slide the stakes through each channel.

Lift the teepee and adjust stakes for an even conical shape. Tie rope around one stake, wrap tightly around all stakes several times, and secure with a knot.

Add whimsy by letting kids decorate with paint. Opt for washable paints for changeable designs or acrylic/latex for permanent ones.
