Before you begin, choose a color scheme that works well with the fabric you've selected, so the finished desktop has a more cohesive look.
Clean your desk surface with a household cleaner to remove dirt, etc.
Use medium grit sandpaper to lightly sand the entire surface to smooth out any irregularities. This will help the paint adhere to the surface.
After sanding, wipe with a slightly damp cloth to remove surface residue.
Using a roller, cover the surface with an even layer of primer. For smaller surfaces, like legs, use a foam or bristle brush. If necessary, cover any brush marks with an additional layer.
Wait for the primer to dry completely, and then start applying the paint, starting at the top.
While you wait for the desk top to dry, start painting the legs. In this case, multiple colors were used for the legs to create a more youthful design. Use painter's tape when painting detail areas to block painting of unwanted areas.
Wait for the paint to dry completely and add an additional coat if necessary. Remove painter's tape. Then measure the area to be covered with fabric. In this case, the side surfaces are measured for fabric.
Add at least an inch to that measurement, then mark your fabric to that size, and then cut it. We added an inch as there was an overhang that the fabric could tuck over to form an even line.
Apply a thin, even layer of Mod Podge to the side surfaces where the fabric will be applied. Lay out the fabric and smooth surface with your hand, removing any air bubbles or wrinkles.
If you've added extra length to go under, apply glue to the bottom of the desk and adhere the overhanging fabric. Let dry.
Cut circles of fabric in different patterns for the top of the desk. We use a polka dot pattern to mimic the polka dots on the fabric used on the sides.
Cut circles in various sizes and attach them to the table's top surface with Mod Podge.
Once finished, apply a finish coat to seal the fabric and provide a more even work surface. Wait for the final coat to dry and your new desktop is ready to go!
