Craft a stunning northern woods-style wreath by arranging salvaged picket fence tips in a circle and adorning them with lush evergreen garlands and pinecones. This upcycling project, inspired by expert salvager Joanne Palmisano, transforms humble materials into timeless decor.
chop saw
punch out
1-3/4 to 2-inch (18 to 20) galvanized wood screws
glue gun
Phillips screwdriver
wire cutters
salvaged picket fence pieces (36 to 38)
large wooden wreath shape
evergreen garland with pinecones
additional pinecones (10 to 12)
22-gauge floral wire
wood glue
Clean and cut picket fence pieces to assorted lengths, using the top 6 to 8 inches of the pickets.
Lay out your design on the wreath form, placing the largest pieces at the back for depth and dimension.
Start with the back or bottom layer. Apply wood glue generously, then weigh it down with heavy objects to ensure a strong bond. Allow to dry overnight before adding the next layer. Repeat, weighting and drying overnight. The glue helps secure pieces during screwing but won't bear the full weight alone.
Drive galvanized screws through the pickets into the wooden wreath ring, ensuring they contact both the top and bottom of each picket. Watch for splitting—use two screws per piece if needed. Avoid countersinking; leave screw heads exposed to anchor the garland later. Ensure screws don't protrude from the back to prevent surface damage.
Wrap the evergreen garland (faux preferred for longevity) around the wreath's interior, securing it to the exposed screw heads. Use 22-gauge floral wire and cutters to fasten garland and additional pinecones securely.
Wire or glue on extra pinecones for added texture and charm.
