Start with precise measurements for a professional result. Measure the height and width of the window area for the bench and shelving (Image 1). For the shelves, measure the side panels of the unit and the shelf boards themselves (Image 2).

Use a scrap wood guide for straight cuts on the shelves with a circular saw. Always wear a mask when cutting medium-density fiberboard (MDF) to protect against dust.

Lay out the upright supports and mark the exact positions for the shelves on the unit.

Pre-drill holes in the vertical sides and shelves to accommodate the screws, preventing wood split.

Build the unit with wood glue for strength, then secure with countersunk screws.

Sand any rough edges with a hand sander for a polished finish. Set the shelving unit aside.

Measure the bench frame area accurately. Cut 2x4 boards to length using a miter saw.

Remove existing baseboard trim. Secure the long frame pieces to the wall with 2-1/2-inch screws (Image 1). Position the shorter 2x4s to form the frame outline (Image 2).

Measure and cut plywood to fit the frame with a circular saw (Image 1). Fasten it securely with wood screws, working around the entire frame (Image 2).

Position the top piece, then measure for the storage door below.

Cut the door using a circular saw and handsaw (Image 1). Attach a piano hinge to the door and bench top with 1/2-inch wood screws (Image 2).

Secure trim around the bench with glue and finishing nails (Image 1). Complete the look with paint and crown molding (Image 2).
