As a professional woodworker with years of custom cabinetry experience, start by nailing select pine planks together using 2-1/4-inch nails to form a sturdy box frame.
Nail the shelves securely into the box. Space the bottom three shelves to accommodate baskets, placing a 1x8 board beneath each for support.
Cut a shallow plywood panel to fit the back of the unit. Apply construction adhesive and secure it firmly in place for added stability.
Standard drawer runners are 12 inches long. For shallower units, use a reciprocating saw to remove the center section, retaining the front and back portions.
Cut 1x8 boards to shelf width using a hacksaw to create dedicated bases for each basket.
Screw the drawer guides to the shelf bases. Position the front half flush with the base front, and the back half extending 1 inch over the rear.
Attach each shelf base to the basket bottom with construction adhesive and 2-3 half-inch screws. Ensure the basket back protrudes 1/2 inch and the front extends a few inches beyond the base and unit.
Screw the mating halves of the drawer runners to the inside of the shelving unit, aligning them directly on the bottom three shelves. The front should be flush with the unit front, back half against the shelf.
Insert the completed drawers onto the tracks for smooth operation.
Shim and nail the unit into a wall stud cavity sized to fit. Paint as desired. Ideal for storing spices, plastic wrap, and other slim kitchen essentials.
