DIY Travel Pet Bed: Transform a Picnic Basket into a Portable Carrier

Introduction

As a DIY enthusiast and pet owner with years of crafting portable pet solutions, I've perfected this budget-friendly project. This versatile carrier features a removable mesh top, doubling as a cozy bed for home or travel.

Step 1

Make a Waterproof Basket Liner

Fold a plastic tablecloth in half on your work surface. Place the basket upside down on it and trace the outline with a pen. Cut the doubled tablecloth at least 3 inches larger all around for sewing and stuffing. Sew the layers together around the edges, leaving an opening for filling. Stuff it, then sew the opening closed.

Step 2

Stuff the Liner

Fill the liner with bedding remnants or padding for cushioning. Sew it securely closed. Slip it into a pillowcase for extra comfort and a finished look.

Step 3

Decorate the Basket

Personalize it by hot-gluing wooden letters spelling your pet's name to the side. Paint it, add ribbons, or leave it rustic—your choice.

Step 4

Make the Mesh Cover

Cut screen material large enough to cover the handles and extend halfway up the basket sides. Trim corners to fit the basket shape. Sew a narrow casing around the edges for elastic, leaving a small gap. Thread elastic through using a safety pin.

Step 5

Assemble the Mesh Cover

Fit the cover snugly over the basket, sew the elastic ends together, and close the seam for a secure hold.

When not traveling, tuck the removable mesh cover inside under the pillow for easy storage.
