Placemats typically measure 12" x 18" to 14" x 20". Position them at least two inches from the table runner's edge. I've found making extras handy for replacements. Add four inches to width and length (two inches per side) for hems—this is your total fabric per placemat.

With years of crafting experience, lay upholstery fabric wrong side up, top with fusible web, then contrasting lining right side up. Pin layers. Iron from center outward to prevent bubbles—use a nonstick sheet if needed. Repeat for all placemats.

Fold long edges 1/2” to wrong side, press flat. Fold again 1/2”, press. Slip fusible tape between layers and steam-iron securely, moving back and forth. Repeat on short sides.

For flat corners that lay perfectly, add a drop or two of fabric glue under the hem.

Runners shine at 1/3 table width—divide table width by three. Add two feet to table length for overhang. Include four inches total to width and length (two inches per side) for hems. That's your fabric cut size.

Cut fabric to size. Form 1/2” double hems on all sides, like the placemats. Tuck fusible tape into the second fold for a secure hold.

Apply fabric glue under hem corners to ensure they lay flat.

Skip pricey linens—DIY these and invest in a delicious meal. As a trusted crafter, I love how affordable and simple these double-sided pieces are.
