Imagine placemats where kids can doodle, write messages, or say hello during meals. After dinner, simply wipe away the chalk along with the crumbs for effortless cleanup. As a seasoned crafter with years of DIY experience, I've perfected this no-sew method using fabric, particle board, and chalkboard paint for durable, family-friendly results.

Iron the fabric perfectly smooth to ensure no wrinkles appear when attaching it to the particle board.

Measure and cut a piece of fabric 1 inch larger on each side than the particle board. For a 14" x 18" board, cut the fabric to 16" x 20".

Spread a thin layer of decoupage glue over the front of the board.

Center the fabric carefully over the glued board and press it flat.

Use your hands to smooth out the fabric, eliminating all air bubbles and wrinkles.

Allow the glue to dry, then flip the board and trim excess fabric corners into triangles to create angled flaps.

Apply decoupage glue to the flaps and fold them over the board's back. Let dry completely.

Trace the board onto fabric with a pencil and cut just inside the line for a slightly smaller piece to cover the back.

Glue the backing fabric in place and allow it to dry fully. Your fabric placemat base is now complete.

Brush a coat of decoupage glue on both sides to seal the fabric. Dry each side thoroughly before proceeding.

Once dry, apply a thin, even layer of chalkboard paint horizontally across the top. Wait 1 hour, then apply another vertical coat. Cure for 24 hours total. For some fabrics, add two more clear chalkboard coats in each direction.
